Since the 17th century, Kongsvinger Fortress, the fortress that gave its name to the town of Kongsvinger, has on several occasions has played an important role in the history of national politics. It has been Napoleon’s north-west flank, decisive for Norway’s independence and a strategic military defence that has protected the country by guarding the border. Up to modern times, the Fortress has had absolute control of one of the main arteries between Sweden and Norway, the Winger Royal Passageway.
